Robert Strathern Lindsay was a Writer to the Signet (solicitor) and an officer in the 9th (Highlanders) Roual Scots, a territorial battalion in Edinburgh. He went to the Western Front with his battalion in February 1915, was promoted to captain, became the intelligence officer and was awarded the Military Cross in January 1917. In April 1921 the Territorials were mobilised for the coal strike and the 9th (Defence Force) Royal Scots were at 'Addiewell District and Cardenden'.
