History of the Welfare
The Club
By Billy Kane
There has been a welfare in Loganlea/Addiewell for many years. The first meeting and active movement to create a welfare organisation started in the early 1920s. A few years ago I was researching this very subject at Wullie Connolly House (Local History Library, in Blackburn, where I copied reports of some of the meetings, concerts etc. from the local press. I intend to use these cuttings from then up to the present day, to indicate the struggle and commitment people have shown over the years, to give us the the present facilities we have today, i.e.the lounge area, the main function hall, and the Pit stop. It is in essence a tribute to the people of the village over the years and to let the people of today appreciate, and be proud of what they have.
These 3 documents are the first ones I came across, when I was researching the welfare in this area a few years ago. I found them in the records dept. of C.I.S.W.O.(Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation) at their headquarters in Scotland at Bathgate. As you can see in the first document it is an application for a welfare scheme to be started in Loganlea. This came from the Stoneyburn and district committee to the secretaries District Welfare Committee (Lanarkshire). Loganlea was under the jurisdiction of the Stoneyburn Welfare at that time - 31st May 1922. You will see in document 1 at No.- nature of proposed scheme - a 60ft. army hut for recreation purposes. In document 3, could some of the names on the Stoneyburn and District Welfare Committee be one of your relatives? Let us know - because these individuals started it all.
