Snowy and Sodie outside Loganlea Pit Baths

Loganlea Pit Baths

By Billy Kane

These photographs were taken at Loganlea Colliery, I think in the 1940s just outside the baths. The opening of pit baths was a dream come true for miners. This is exemplified by these photos of two miners relaxing before going for their shower. The miners in question are Snowy (Tom), Kelly and Sodie (Jimmy) Murray. It was only in later years I found out Snowy's real name was Tom, but in comparison, it was only a few people who called Jimmy-Sodie. This was the nick-name of his father. What they had in common was a quick wit, and were good friends in their younger days. Jimmy was an amateur musician and his two sons, Arthur and Pat, are very accomplished guitarists.
