Quarrelling and fighting?

Not in Addiewell in 1876!

from the West Lothian Courier

Famous for fighting

Trade is still keeping remarkably good, plenty of work, activity on all sides, and every appearance of a very busy winter.  It is gratifying to observe also that we are improving in our morals; we have not anything like the quarrelling and fighting for which at one time we were famous, a little shindy that would scarcely be looked at or spoken about last year, is now the talk of the whole place, so few and far between have they become.  It is to be hoped that this state of things will continue and that Addiewell will be as remarkable for the absence of crime and bloodshed in the future, as it was some time ago for their frequency.
